19 South LaSalle was designed by William Le Baron Jenney who has become known as developing a building technique that utilizes steel to allow for taller structures that were practically fireproof and could accommodate large expanses of glass. This type of construction began to be heavily utilized by many Chicago architects and eventually became to be known as the "First Chicago School" of architecture. Stylistically, these buildings were often influenced by Henry Hobson Richardson and his Romenesque designs. This style, combined with just a touch of Art Nouveau, and the right angles formed within steel structures gave 19 South LaSalle its historic and classic look and is a very early example of the now famed "Chicago School" and modern architecture as we know it.

19 South LaSalle street, which is located in Chicago's Central Loop, has just completed a $3 million life safety upgrade. The work included a state-of-the-art sprinkler system, fire pump, water service, fire command center and emergency generator.
